Tasman Discovers New Zealand

It was on this day, December 13, 1642 that Abel Janszoon Tasman discovered New Zealand.

Tasman (1603 - October 10, 1659), a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant is best known for his voyages of 1642 and 1644. His was the first known European expedition to reach the islands of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and New Zealand and to sight the Fiji islands, in 1643. Tasman, his navigator Visscher, and his Merchant Gilsemans also mapped substantial portions of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

On November 24, 1642 Tasman sighted the west coast of Tasmania. He named his discovery Van Diemen's Land after Anthony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Proceeding south he skirted the southern end of Tasmania and turned north-east until he was off Cape Frederick Hendrick on the Forestier Peninsula. An attempt at landing was made but the sea was too rough; however, the carpenter of the ship swam through the surf, and, planting the Dutch flag, Tasman claimed formal possession of the land on December 3, 1642.

Tasman had intended to proceed in a northerly direction but as the wind was unfavourable he steered east. On December13 they sighted land on the north-west coast of the South Island, New Zealand.

Husband and wife team, Steve & Bonnie are making plans to attend our Faith & Freedom Conference on April 4-6. Steve & Bonnie are Gospel singers from Tulsa, Oklahoma. They are entertaining, talented and an inspiration to all. So we have another exciting reason why you need to make plans to attend this great conference. The other two reasons is Paul Fromm from Ontario, Canada and Don Black founder and driving force of Stormfront Radio. I think Derick Black, known as Theodoric on Stormfront will be attending also. We are going to be sending out registration forms soon. If you would like to attend, write me at: Thomas Robb, P.O. Box 354, Bergman, AR 72615. Also those of you with children need to bring them as we always have children classes. Teens will find a special excitement in attending.

There are a couple of other exciting speakers we hope to yet hear from. So keep watching this blog to get the announcement of new speakers. Be sure to make plans to attend the Faith & Freedom Conference next April 4-6.
This is gonna be great!
